Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford began to be attracted to acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in the year 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her repertoire in 1996, soon gained her attention.
